SUMMARY:The London Mithraeum – The Roman Temple of Mithras
DESCRIPTION:I have great pleasure in inviting you to join me for a visit to the London Mithraeum – The Roman Temple of Mithras – on Tuesday 9 October. \nOpened only last year\, the Roman Temple of Mithras has been returned to its location of discovery in the heart of the City. Situated on the site of Bloomberg’s new European headquarters it showcases the ancient temple and a selection of the remarkable Roman artefacts found during the recent excavation which was one of the most extensive ever to have taken place in London\, revealing new evidence of the area’s Roman origins. The site lies over the course of one of London’s lost rivers\, the Walbrook. Nearly 2\,000 years ago when Londinium was founded by the Romans\, this river marked the limits of their first settlement. The mysterious cult of Mithras spread across Europe and attracted predominantly merchants\, soldiers and imperial administrators. In the 3rd century AD\, nearly 200 years after the founding of London\, a Roman Londoner built a temple to the god Mithras on reclaimed ground next to the river. We have the great opportunity to be joined by a curator from the Museum of London Archaeology who will give a talk about the temple and give us a guided tour. \nOur visit will commence at 5.00 pm and last about an hour. Following our visit we will be dining at Williamson’s Tavern\, 1 Groveland Court\, London EC4\, about 5 minutes’ walk from the London Mithraeum. \nNumbers are limited to 30\, spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis

SUMMARY:Tour of Smithfield Market and Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:May’s event is one for Early Birds\, insomniacs and carnivores (but of course vegetarians are also welcome) as we shall be having a guided tour of one of London’s oldest markets\, Smithfield in the City of London.  This will be led by a City of London guide who will meet us at the street level entrance to Barbican Underground Station ready for a prompt start at 6.30am. \nWe will explore some of the small streets and hidden alleyways around the Market in order to put it into its historical context.  We will then walk through the entire Market from Barbican to Farringdon Street\, including the derelict part destined to become the new home for the Museum of London.  As Smithfield is a night market there are often bargains to be had at the end of the night’s trading.  Consequently\, it’s a good idea to bring a strong (cool) bag for any purchases you might like to make.  It is also worthwhile wearing comfortable shoes preferably with a non-slip sole. \nAfter the tour is finished we should have worked up a healthy appetite to enable us to enjoy a hearty breakfast at Smiths of Smithfield.  The breakfast menu at Smiths is currently being updated and I will forward details nearer the date. \nThis should be a fascinating event which is well worth the early start.   \nThe cost of the Tour is £12.50 for members and £13.00 for guests.  Please complete the  booking form and return it by 8 May.

SUMMARY:An evening with Lord Chris Smith of Finsbury
DESCRIPTION:I am delighted to announce the very special event for April will be an evening with Lord Chris Smith of Finsbury\, when he will share his thoughts on “Brexit\, Trump\, Corbyn and the Future”. This will take place at Nomura’s offices on Thursday 19 April at 6pm – 7.30pm after which there will be ample time for questions\, followed by a wine and canapé Reception.  The evening will end at 9pm. \nAs 2018 starts with few of the concerns and worries of 2017 resolved we are incredibly fortunate to have someone with Lord Smith’s breadth of experience to help us in understanding what is really going on in our world\, from Brexit to the Trump administration\, the emergence of the Momentum movement and the resurgence of Labour under Jeremy Corbyn\, Lord Smith’s political neighbour in Islington North for over 20 years.  I very much look forward to welcoming you and your guests to what will be probably one of the most significant (non-party) political briefings in the City this year. \nWe are fortunate on this occasion not to be restricted by numbers and so I hope you will extend this invitation widely to your friends and colleagues. \nThe cost of the evening is £38 for members and £40 for non-members. \nLord Smith has spent his career at the very heart of British government and administration. Born in Barnet\, he graduated from Cambridge\, where he was president of the Cambridge Union\, with a degree in English and a PhD specialising in Wordsworth and Coleridge\, and then continued his education at Harvard. He returned to the UK to work at a housing charity and first entered politics as a councillor in Islington before being elected to the seat of Islington South in 1983 during the Labour/SDP ‘split’. \nIn 1997 he was appointed to Tony Blair’s first cabinet as Secretary of State for Culture\, Media and Sport\, where among other things we can thank him for introducing free admission to many leading museums. In 2005 he retired from Parliament and was created Baron Smith of Finsbury. \nIn 2008 he accepted the post of Chairman of the Environment Agency\, steering it through a period of unprecedented climatic challenges\, before in 2015 turning full circle to become Master of Pembroke College\, his former alma mater\, where he is now in charge of one of the largest building and expansion projects seen in Cambridge in the last 200 years. Lord Smith now splits his time between Cambridge and his base in the heart of Clerkenwell\, part of the old Borough of Finsbury. \nAs 2018 starts with few of the concerns and worries of 2017 resolved we are incredibly fortunate to have someone with Lord Smith’s breadth of experience to help us understand of what is really going on in our world\, from Brexit to the Trump administration\, the emergence of the Momentum movement and the resurgence of Labour under Jeremy Corbyn\, Lord Smith’s political neighbour in Islington North for over 20 years. \nI look forward to welcoming you and your guests to what will be probably one of the most significant political briefings in the City this year.

SUMMARY:Tour of Royal Hospital Chelsea
DESCRIPTION:The March event is a guided walking tour of the Royal Hospital led by a resident Chelsea Pensioner.  You will see Sir Christopher Wren’s stunning buildings\, hear the captivating stories of the inhabitants – both past and present – and learn what life is like for today’s veterans at the Royal Hospital. \nUntil the 17th Century the state made no specific provision for old and injured soldiers.  Care for the poor and sick was provided by the religious foundations.  Most of this provision ended following the dissolution of the monasteries during the reign of King Henry VIII.  In 1681\, responding to the need to look after these soldiers\, King Charles II issued a Royal Warrant authorising the building of the Royal Hospital Chelsea to care for those ‘broken by age or war’.   \nSir Christopher Wren was commissioned to design and erect the building.  His design is based on the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris.  The original building was intended to house 412 veteran soldiers and their officers and comprised a single quadrangle\, known as Figure Court.  However\, before work had begun it was realised that the buildings would be insufficient and Wren added two further quadrangles to his design.  In 1686\, construction was approved and building commenced.  The early funding was made from deductions from army pay\, with occasional funding from other sources.  In 1692 work was finally completed and the first group of 99 Chelsea Pensioners was admitted in February 1692 and by the end of March the full complement of 476 were in residence. \nThe tour will commence from the Chelsea Gate of the Royal Hospital at 1.30pm and lasts 90 minutes followed by 30 minutes for the Museum and Shop.  We will then have a delicious full afternoon tea with cakes\, a scone with clotted cream and preserve\, and a selection of cocktail sandwiches with tea or coffee \n \nThe cost of the Tour is £16.00 for members and £17.00 for non-members and tea is £13.75 per person inclusive of service.  Please note there is a limit of 30 people for the tour and applications must be received by 17 February.

SUMMARY:Tour of the Assay Office and Goldsmiths' Hall
DESCRIPTION:The Club’s February event is a tour of the London Assay Office and Goldsmiths’ Hall followed by lunch. \nThe Assay Office at Goldsmiths’ Hall has been providing its “Mark of Excellence” since 1300. It is where hallmarking began in 1327 and now covers not only gold and silver\, but also other precious metals such as platinum and palladium. The two hour tour will be conducted by Dave Merry\, Fellow of the Institute of Professional Goldsmiths and a renowned hallmarking expert with over 46 years’ experience. \nYou will hear about the history of this ancient Livery Company and its apprentices\, visit the various departments to see the different ways that metals are tested today\, from the ancient ‘touch testing’ to the high tech XRF & ICPOE Spectroscopy; learn and see how articles are hallmarked\, the verification of British antique silver by the Antique Plate Committee\, counterfeit fakes and how the vast quantity of jewellery and silverware that are hallmarked every day are processed. The tour will culminate in a brief ‘Antiques Roadshow’ type fakes and forgeries session and you will each get a goody bag which will include a book on the Hall and a few Assay Office pamphlets\, but unfortunately no free gold bars! \nWe will then stroll across the road to The Bottlescrue wine bar for a delightful two course lunch with wine. Please make your choices from the following menu: \nMains \nGrilled gammon with free range egg\, spiced pork scratching\, pickle gravy and hand cut chips \nHalloumi salad with avocado\, quinoa\, beetroot\, edamame beans\, tomatoes\, toasted seeds and lemon dressing (v n) \nPlaice fillets with romesco sauce\, almonds\, parsley and Pink Fir Apple potatoes (n) \nDesserts \nGoat’s cheese with wild flower honey and extra virgin rapeseed oil and beetroot crisps (v) \nCoconut panna cotta with Davy’s Port poached fruit and amoretti crumb (n) \nFlourless Bramley apple and winter berry nut crumble with custard (v n) \nv. vegetarian / n. contains nuts \n  \nThe cost of the Tour is £25.00 for members and £26 00 for non-members and lunch is £25.50 per person inclusive of service. \nAs I need to provide the Assay Office with visitors names a week in advance so security passes can be produced\, I should be grateful if you would return your completed booking form and payment  no later than Monday 5 February

SUMMARY:Quiz night and bar food
DESCRIPTION:Quiz Night – 17 January 2018 \nTo brighten the dreary days after the festive season\, the first event of the New Year will be a brain teasing quiz\, written and run by the inimitable Chris Holehouse\, who is always right even if he is wrong. This will be held on 17 January starting at 6pm in the upstairs function room of Ye Olde Watling Pub\, which is on the corner of Watling Street and Bow Lane and is a short stroll from Mansion House tube and Cannon Street stations. It is famous for being Sir Christopher Wren’s drawing office during the building of St Paul’s and so perhaps it may also provide us with inspiration to answer Chris’s questions. \nYou can either organise your own team\, in which case it should be a maximum of six people\, or else if you prefer the Hon. Sec. and myself will match you up with other quiz goers. As always prizes will be awarded with champagne for the winning team and a little something to console the team at the bottom of the leader board. \nA range of bar snacks will be provided to feed the little grey cells and once again it seems we need to provide an early response for the catering so I should be grateful if you would return your completed booking form\, with any dietary requirements and payment to me no later than Monday 8 January. There will be a separate pay bar. \nThe cost of the evening will be a £12 for members and £14 for guests.

DESCRIPTION:Carol Service and Lunch at Coq d’Argent – Sunday 17 December \n  \nThe John Lewis Christmas advert is now on our screens which means Christmas must be fast approaching\, and so it should come as no surprise that I am writing to invite you to a Carol Service\, the Clubs’ December event.  As usual this will take place at St James Garlickhythe\, Garlick Hill\, London EC4V 2AF on Sunday 17 December at 10.30am.  The service will be followed by a reception in the church and then\, as it was so successful last year\, lunch at Coq d’Argent – the restaurant on the rooftop of No 1 Poultry\, opposite Mansion House Tube Station\, just a 5 minute walk from the church.  The service and reception at St James Garlickhythe are free but I do hope that that you will also join us afterwards for the lunch. \nThe menu will be two courses starting with Roasted dry aged sirloin\, Yorkshire pudding\, roasted vegetables and a red wine sauce followed by Caramelised Apple Tarte Tatin with crème fraiche or vanilla ice cream.  The price including a half bottle of wine and service is £46.00 per person.  The restaurant is requesting an early response so I should be grateful if you would return your completed booking form\, with any dietary requirements and payment (on this occasion) to me no later than Tuesday 28 November \nThis year we would once again like to offer you the opportunity to donate gifts when you join us for the Carol Service.  All the gifts will be collected by the Salvation Army and given to deserving children who might not otherwise get a Christmas present.  Please wrap your gift and attach a label\, which can be detached at a later stage\, with an indication of the nature of the present\, what age child might appreciate it and whether it is intended for a boy or a girl or either.
